Engaging Patients During PKB Integration

While your organisation works on integrating with PKB (Patients Know Best), there are numerous proactive steps organisations can take to engage patients in meaningful ways. Since the integration process can be lengthy, mean while the organisation will be successful creating and registering patients to their PKB Patient Record Team, (PRT) of 100–5,000 patients weekly, it’s crucial to maximise this time by actively involving patients in their care journey through PKB. Engaging patients now can drive early adoption, reduce operational costs, and enhance patient experience.

Steps to engage with patients during integration

When integration is ongoing, many organisations already have robust PKB registration processes in place. This offers a valuable opportunity to encourage patient engagement and promote self-management. Below are some key areas for engaging with patients as they start using PKB.

1. Build a comprehensive organisation PKB library

  • Populate PKB with folders of general resources, such as information leaflets, educational materials, and standard documents.

  • Ensure patients can access critical information about the hospital, generic information about services, new letters and general health management.

2. Offer generic care plans

  • Create generic care plan templates that patients can add to their PKB record while waiting for an appointment to support them in self-managing their condition or symptoms.

  • To support patients while waiting for their appointment, treatment or surgery.

  • Include guidance on self-monitoring and lifestyle adjustments, empowering patients to participate in their health.

  • NHSE has created a list of decision support tools that PKB have converted into digital, editable and shareable care plans for people to access when making decisions about their care. To view these care plans, click here.

3. Symptom and measurement tracking

  • Encourage patients to record symptoms and vital measurements in their PKB record. This enriches their health record and provides a valuable data source to clinicians when appointments, treatment or follow-ups occur.

  • Suggest generic metrics patients can track based on local or organisation data, such as blood pressure, pain levels, mood, or other relevant health indicators.

4. Regular comms

  • Proactively communicate updates to patients regarding PKB features and the benefits they can expect as the integration progresses.

  • Inform patients about available functionalities, how to access them, and any upcoming milestones.

5. Review registration stats

  • Reviewing registration stats and observing trends, your PKB Success PM will send these to you periodically after the organisation goes live with PKB.
